Mingo Creek Plantation is located in Georgetown County along the banks of Black Mingo Creek near to where it converges with the Black River. Mingo, or Minko, is from the Chickasaw word for Chief the area was known as a special hunting ground and was a population center of the eastern Chickasaw Indians in Colonial times. In September of 1780 the Battle of Black Mingo took place near Mingo Creek Plantation when General Francis Marion's Patriots routed a Tory Force commanded by Captain J. Coming Ball.
